Avoiding Clogged Kitchen Sinks
One of the most annoying things that can happen to you is a clogged sink drain. Of course, a clog always happens at the worst time, ensuring that you have a sink full of unpleasant water right when company is coming. Fortunately, there are some easy thing you can do to keep your drains in the best condition possible, and make clogs a distant memory. Just avoid putting the wrong things into the sink, and do a little maintenance every now and then. You'll be happy to find that your kitchen sink no longer becomes clogged. Here are some basic tips to help you with avoiding a clogged kitchen sink. No Food - This is a simple one, but a tip we often overlook. Unless you have a garbage disposal installed, don't allow food to go down the drain. That even includes little things like vegetable peelings, bits of pasta, and popcorn kernels. Little things add up over time. Starchy foods are particularly prone to mix with water, turning into a pasty substance that sticks to the inside of your pipes. Another common cause of clogged sink drains is grease. Any type of grease is capable of sticking to the walls of your pipes and hardening. Eventually, enough grease will build up to create a clog. Hot grease may be liquid when poured down the drain, but it quickly solidifies. Instead of putting your leftover grease down the drain, pour it into another container and allow it to solidify. You can then dispose of the container. Avoid detergents. This might sound odd, since detergents are usually used for cleaning. However, dish detergent is the only one that's always safe to put in the sink. Others may clump in the drain, since they aren't being agitated or diluted as they're designed to be. That means that they won't break down correctly. Also, avoid putting chemicals and toxins in the drain. They're not good for the water system, can corrode your pipes, and may solidify in the drain. Avoid using lime or calcium in the drain, despite the fact that it's used in some septic systems to reduce odor. That lime and calcium is specially formulated not to clump. Ordinary materials will cause problems, and a nasty clog that will come back to haunt you later. In addition to keeping clogging substances out of the sink, you should also maintain it carefully. Clean your sink regularly, and use a plunger if it is draining slowly. Once a month, use drain cleaner to remove anything that might be building up in your pipes. This should keep your drain clear, and help you avoid a clogged kitchen sink.
