Accent a Modern Kitchen with Undermount Kitchen Sinks

Modern kitchens generally have smooth surfaces and shiny textures.  To avoid spoiling the graceful lines of your kitchen with a bulky sink rim, consider an undermount kitchen sink.  They're visually appealing, and offer easy countertop and sink surface maintenance to boot.  If you're interested in having a modern look to your kitchen, right down to the sink, a kitchen sink with and undermount may be the best choice.

Undermount kitchen sinks are also referred to as recessed sinks.  They're more expensive and difficult to install than ordinary sinks, since the rim of the sink is hidden.  This means that unless you have a lot of experience installing this kind of kitchen sink, you should probably leave installation to a professional. It's very important, when installing undermount kitchen sinks, that the hole cut in the countertop isn't too large.  Otherwise, leakage could occur.

If you're planning to do the work yourself, it's best to start installing your undermount kitchen sink by setting it upside down on the countertop, in the location where you'd like it to remain.  Trace around the edges of the sink, then cut the hole with a hand saw or keyhole saw.  Curved sink edges can be tricky to cut, so go carefully.  If you're at all unsure about cutting, consider asking a professional to do this.  Remember that you can only install an undermount sink in a solid surface countertop.  Granite and marble are two elegant, popular choices.

Once you have a hole of the correct size cut, you can place the sink.  Don't worry about the faucet.  It can be attached once the undermount kitchen sink is in place. Before placement, test fit the sink, and mark a location for the mounting clips. Clean the ridge of the sink with denatured alcohol, and run a bead of silicone sealant around the edge before clamping the sink into place.  After tightening the clamps, screw down the sink, and hand tighten the wing nuts to secure the bowl.

Once the undermount kitchen sink is mounted, you can install the faucets much as you would for any other type of sink.  However, be sure that you allow the silicone to cure at least overnight before attempting to hook up the drain and plumbing, and before trying to use the sink.  Until then, you risk a leak.  Maintenance of undermount kitchen sinks is easy – just wipe any dirt or debris down into the sink, and rinse it away.  For those looking for an easily maintained, modern looking addition to their kitchen, undermount sinks are a great choice.  Their attractive appearance and simple design more than make up for the slight additional difficulty in installation.
